Monitoring and Evaluation

The M & E process tracks the project cycle, gathering information from client companies and AMSCO Managers and assessing performance on AMSCO interventions on a regular and consistent basis as they progress, as compared to baseline.  The M & E system provides a regular disciplined process for collecting and analysing information on the performance of the projects, based around the core indicators, and for reporting them to AMSCO   staff, management, Board and donors.

By defining targets for AMSCO interventions and monitoring their success during implementation the monitoring and evaluation provides a basis for focusing operational management attention on the progress being achieved by the AMSCO managers, project officers, capacity development in delivering on AMSCO’s mission and highlight the need for corrective action if results fall short of expectations.

AMSCO has adopted the Logical framework that illustrates the sequence of steps by which AMSCO’s interventions help achieve its primary mission of improving the performance of client companies and promoting broader development goals. The log frame highlights the linkages between AMSCO’ activities, the outputs they deliver and the outcomes they achieve. In so doing, it is possible to identify the successful companies and what aspects of this success are attributable to AMSCO’s interventions. The focus for AMSCO and its managers is predominantly on delivering on the outputs and outcomes that will result in positive changes to the desired development impact metrics.

The total outcome tracked for AMSCO is combined in the portfolio management system in two categories:

  • Key outcome metrics, which are defined as
    • wealth Creation
      • Increase in revenue
      • Increase in profitability
      • Increase in number of successful companies assisted
      • Increase in number of managers placed
    • Social impact
      • Increase in number of local managers promoted
      • Employment generation
      • Increase in female participation rate
  • Project specific outcome metrics which are subdivided into
    • Selected outcomes (outcomes frequently encountered in AMSCO projects)
    • Custom outcomes (unique to a project)
