M-Kopa Leads Way in African Solar Innovations

Nairobi based mobile technology company; M-Kopa has launched a new solar lighting service called M-Kopa Solar. The revolutionary deal makes high quality d.light solar home systems affordable for many rural Kenyans.
The M-Kopa system consists of a base-station with a solar panel, three lamps and a charging kit for phones. This electrical system is enough for a small household and would normally cost US$ 200 but now customers in Kenya pay US$ 30 up front and the rest in small installments using their phones.

As long as the customer makes payments they will continue to receive light and power. When they are done paying off the balance, they will then own the system outright. The system is flexible, enabling customers to pay off their debt remotely. The base-station also serves as a payment record that can be considered by banks when offering loans or mortgages. The first commercial units went on sale in June 2012. M-Kopa is a client of AMSCO.
