M-Kopa Solar won the 2015 Zayed Future Energy Prize for Small and Medium Enterprise at the annual Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in Abu Dhabi yesterday, 19 January 2015.
The occasion marked the first time that a company with headquarters in sub-Saharan Africa has won a prize in the enterprise and SME categories. Considered the world’s foremost renewable and sustainable energy award, the total prize package includes funds to the sum of US $1.5m to be used to launch a new M-Kopa University training program for staff and sales agents.
"We are honoured to win the Zayed Future Energy Prize,” said M-Kopa MD, Jesse Moore. “The prize brings global attention to M-KOPA Solar's business model, which has brought clean, affordable solar power to 150,000 homes in East Africa in less than three years.”
AMSCO has provided management and capacity development support to the Kenya-based service provider since 2010. A market leader in 'pay-as-you-go' energy services for off-grid customers, M-Kopa combines mobile payments with GSM sensor technology to enable the leasing of solar power systems.
